Noah is one of the millions of HIV-positive children worldwide, but his story is one of a kind. In June of 2008, Noah had no idea his life was about to change. Leigh Blake, who, with Alicia Keys, co-founded Keep A Child Alive (KCA), one of the most influential HIV/AIDS fundraising organizations, had traveled to Kigali, Rwanda to visit one of the many clinics KCA supports. After her work was done at the clinic, Leigh paid visits to a few patients' homes, one of which turned out to be Noah's. At the time Noah was surviving on one bowl of porridge a day. But despite his emaciated frame, Leigh saw something vibrant in his eyes so she asked him what his biggest dream in life was. "I want to record an album of my music," he told her. Leigh, a veteran of the music industry, was intrigued and asked if he would perform.

Here he was in the slums of Kigali dreaming such an enormous dream," Leigh recalls. "He was someone with so little access to popular culture, really almost none at all. But as soon as he started rapping, I saw he had it-the talent and the intensity to be a star- and I knew I had to find a way make his dream come true." Noah first became interested in rap music when he was 8-years-old and heard a classmate rapping in French. He remembers asking himself why he couldn't do it too and decided to teach himself. While he didn't have a radio, CD player or any other way to access or record his music, he says he kept the music in his head, thinking about it constantly.

At that first meeting, Leigh invited Noah to perform at Keep A Child Alive's Annual Fundraiser, The Black Ball in New York City, an a-list gala, and he accepted enthusiastically, though probably didn't believe her. Â Leigh kept her word and three months later he was on his way.

When Noah arrived in the US, he went straight to producer Swizz Beatz's recording studio where he had his first taste of recording. Then, he met Alicia Keys, KCA's co-founder, and one of Noah's favorite artists. "Here I was in America, where anything is possible," he recalls. Finally, Noah performed his rap "Brothers" at the Black Ball. The audience, including Alicia Keys, Bono, Padma Lakshmi, Tyra Banks, Queen Latifah erupted. "The whole thing was like a dream," Noah remembers.

Perhaps most importantly, American Idol's creator, Simon Fuller, was also at the Black Ball and was so impressed by Noah that he dedicated himself to making his dream come true. Noah returned to Rwanda, bringing back an iPod and other gifts that he shared with his friends. Most importantly, he brought back hope to a place where it is desperately needed. "My Grandmother wants me to live in America now but says never to forget about her, and to send money back," he says. Today through his music and his appearance on American Idol, Noah has the power to transform not only his life and the lives of his family, but the futures of millions of people with HIV. Thanks to the life-saving medication and care provided by KCA with the support of American Idol's audience, he can prove that HIV is not a death sentence for the millions of children infected by the disease, and that dreams really do come true.

Forty-six years after he gave his famous “I Have a Dream Speech” in Washington on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. is set to finally be immortalized with his own colossal sculpture, titled “The Stone of Hope” in the nation’s capitol. The three-piece monument depicts the civil rights leader stading, arms crossed, before a large and imposing mountain representing the leader’s hard-fought struggle. With the historic inauguration of Barack Obama coming a day after what would have been King’s 80th birthday today, the amount needed to construct the memorial has almost been reached. So far, a reported $100 million of the project’s estimated $120 million construction cost has been raised through donations to the privately financed Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation. Scheduled for completion by year’s end, The MLK memorial will be built on a four-acre corner of the National Mall, on the banks of the Potomac River between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. The image of King is being realized by Chinese master sculptor LEI YIXIN who won a design competition to create the artwork. The decision has not come without controversy, however. Allowing a Chinese artist to helm the project was criticized as being out of step with King’s teachings given that country’s human rights abuses, while the image of King proposed by Yixin itself, drew the ire of The U.S. Commission on Fine Arts earlier this year. According to the group, the image of the civil rights leader shown standing with his arms crossed was too “confrontational,” and the general style of the planned 28-foot granite statue “recalls a genre of political sculpture that has recently been pulled down in other countries.” Luckily, both sides have since reconciled and King’s nephew Isaac Newton Farris Jr., president and chief executive officer of the King Center in Atlanta and nephew of the civil rights leader, has declared that the design correctly depicts his legacy: “My uncle was a strong and confrontational figure, his confrontation helped us to complete what the original founders intended when this country was formed, by confronting our problems with race in this nation. He is receiving pressure from all sides, his parents are stressing him because he is failing in school, his girlfriend thinks he is a loser, his best friend has become his rival because he is better than him. Things come to a head after Derrick gets arrested and a fight ensues with his father resulting in him running away from home. This past weekend, the YES WE SERVE organization and the Live Mechanics crew took part in the "Missionary For A Day" movement. On the first Saturday of March we visited two orphanages in Mexicali, where we provided clothes, food, toiletries, toys, and a good time for kids. One of the highlights of the trip was pampering the young girls with hair styling and manicures. And for the young boys at the orphanage, they played with a new set of Legos and showed us how talented they really were with their building skills. This was my first "Missionary For A Day" mission, but it wont be my last. Those kids were so happy to see us coming there to lend a helping hand. The experience showed me how blessed we really are, but most of all how we should bless those in need. These kids are in need. Remember, the first Saturday of every month a the YesWeServe group goes down to Mexicali, Mexico and serve at two different orphanages, El Niño Feliz(The Happy Child) and La Esperanza de los Niños(The Hope of the Children).

El Niño Feliz
Doña Concha is the director of this home. Her faithful helpers are Ruth and her sisters. Their building was secured through donations from church members in San Jose, California, after their first building was destroyed by fire two years ago. None of the children or adults was hurt, and currently there are twenty-four children living at El Niño Feliz.

La Esperanza de los Niños
Martín and Elena are the directors of La Esperanza. Their steadfast helper is Juanita. This building was constructed six years ago, but is in need of constant repair. There are presently seventeen children living at La Esperanza de los Niños.

French outdoor installation artist (call it “street art” if you must) extraordinaire JR continues his epic 28 MILLIMETER: WOMEN Project with the unveiling this week of his most ambitious stage yet in KIBERA, KENYA. Reconnecting with the subjects he photographed over a year ago in the city—one of the largest slums in Africa—at the start of his mission to portray on a grand scale the unseen and unempowered women of the world, the reunion was an especially poignant moment for the artist. With the help of enthusiastic residents, JR managed to cover 2,000 square meters of local rooftops with photos of the eyes and faces of the women of Kibera, giving them a monumental voice and presence in a city where their own existence is often marginalized. Most of the subjects had their photos installed atop their own roofs and for the first time in JRs global series of installations, the material used is water-resistant enabling that the photo itself to protect the fragile houses in the upcoming rainy season. In order to further spread his message throughout the massive city, JR also encapsulated the local train that runs through the area twice daily with the eyes of local women alongside those of women photographed in Brazil, India, Cambodia, and other parts of Africa whose stories and images reveal a global solidarity of plight and purpose. The pinnacle of the experience, however, comes when the eyes on the moving train align with the static bottom halves of the subject’s faces posted along the train’s embankment, completing the smiling portraits for a split second in rapid succession before moving on to the next village where the experience is repeated.

Project NY came and went. The show was incredible for the Live Mechanics brand. Even in the midst of the extreme NY weather, the buyers still came out to our booth to buy the spring 09 collection and preview fall 09. We weren't hard to find, people just followed the crowd. Some old friends paid us a visit, like Pieces of Brooklyn, True SF, UBIQ, UTAW and some other dope stores from the mid west and the south. Even in the hype of the show, everyone took time out to witness history in the making as our new President, Barack Obama was sworn in. It was a celebration at the Project show. We watched, we toasted and then we went back to work. Check out the slide show below.

A number of artists were commissioned to put their creativity to work to create artwork which reference and pay respect to the influential group. Haiti's regional, historical, and ethnolinguistic position is unique for several reasons. It was the first independent nation in the Caribbean, the first post-colonial independent black-led nation in the world, and the only nation whose independence was gained as part of a successful slave rebellion.
